For myself and for a lot of people I know who grew up in more closed circumstances (closed in terms of geography or culture or family or whatever), the seeming inaccessability of what we perceived vaguely as “cool” or “real” music 1) made us resourceful (in finding ways to circumvent our apparent limitations) and 2) made our tastes mutate in interesting ways (in learning to ferret out the merits of whatever music we could get our ears around).
Now, with everything available—or at least knowable—to everbody all the time, there’s really no need for that kind of improvisation. The idea of “making the best of what’s around” now just seems quaint. I feel that there’s a certain kind of plasticity of thought that’s just going away, and that eclectic tastes in people below a certain age no longer reflect much more than a desire to pursue eclectic tastes.
