I think we agree about this — i used white men as an example because I think people are more likely to give them the benefit of the doubt that their personae have agency & im trying to peel that back here.
(EDIT: Basically we’re making separate points that aren’t actually contradictory overall — I just bristled at the idea that the visual component is separable from the music. For many men reinforcing objectification is an issue that they need to critique & be aware of — but I don’t think that the answer is for them to separate the visual from the musical, but to acknowledge how the visual feeds into their impression in a way that is honest & respectful)
