“Swoon” by Chemical Brothers (Lindstrom and Prins Thomas Remix)
I’ve pretty much been listening to this one on repeat before going out for the night after Meaghan recommended a couple of weeks ago. The nice thing about Lindstrom and Prins Thomas is that they always deliver. I understand that is a heavy, drawn out sentiment, but they’ve yet to prove me wrong.
I actually prefer the original which fits way more in w the 90s revival goin on right now
Now in one convenient zip file. The internet wins again.
You should absolutely read the text as well if you haven’t yet.
Yeah this is seriously amazing. Reading this I was struck by how much this scene had such a national influence. The aesthetic of it had such a massive impact. Street music had a really diverse sound!! Its so easy to tell how the Cali rappers I’m real into right now, visiting New York & hanging w/ Cormega, would be so strongly impacted my it at a musical level … there’s so much abstract nostalgia in the newer mob figaz shit, an attempt to bring that kind of musicality balanced w/ street thug vibes back to the west coast.
also real interesting is the breadth of the music covered … its totally not the one-dimensional kind of shit that writers STILL give this stuff … that hard-edged street sound was just a single common aesthetic touchpoint that united a whole constellation of moods & approaches — it was the very opposite of ‘one-note’. “Its all trying to sound HARD” is the late 90s equivalent to the “Its all so repetitive” of disco.
This is the way the summer used to feel in the 90s. I’m not speaking from personal experience because I didn’t leave my parent’s basement but once between 1989 and 2002. I only understood summer as a concept filtered through Yo! MTV Raps and this is exactly what that was like.
Look, if you are dating a dude and want your dude to dress well, it is a simple process, because dudes will pretty much wear whatever is in the closet and vaguely clean, as long as a) it is comfortable, and b) they think it makes them look good. (Because we have no idea what…
this is the dumbest shit ever. 6 months?? u want to date a dude w/ taste, date a dude with taste
“Am I in love? —yes, since I am waiting. The other one never waits. Sometimes I want to play the part of the one who doesn’t wait; I try to busy myself elsewhere, to arrive late; but I always lose at this game. Whatever I do, I find myself there, with nothing to do, punctual, even ahead of time. The lover’s fatal identity is precisely this: I am the one who waits.”—Roland Barthes in A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments Oh, how I love this book… (via huanita)

“You look at hugely-rated shows like ‘Two and a Half Men’ that get like a gazillion viewers - I have the sneaking suspicion that not one of them watches ‘Party Down.’ I think if a girl who liked ‘Party Down’ found out that her boyfriend liked ‘Two and a Half Men,’ she would break up with him.”—Lizzy Caplan on the “Party Down” cancellation.
I loved “Party Down” but it’s this mentality that makes me a little self conscious about being vocal about loving something like “Party Down.” I know she’s half joking here but I’m still sickened by these attempts to define people by whether or not they enjoy the “right” [hipsterrunoff x stuffwhitepeoplelike scarequotes] type of niche entertainment. Plenty of interesting people like boring things. These days even more than ever plenty of boring people like interesting things. If you are building all of your relationships around taste alone you yourself are probably a boring person and you’re definitely a shitty person. (via rakimtwins)
re: tom b.’s review of ‘mr. zone 6′, on the scale of pfork rap scores it got a pretty great rating, but i wonder why tom always insists on making a point of what he perceives to be gucci’s “stupidity”, or at least the “stupidity”…
